Blackwork Chest Medallion Tattoo by Chyloe

The piece

This blackwork medallion was done by Chyloe at Golden Tarot Ink Club in Winter Park, near Orlando. A large circular design covers the right chest and rolls onto the shoulder, built from concentric rings of stylized lettering and geometric linework around a central disc. It is a big, bold statement piece.

A design like this is an exercise in precision. Rings have to stay concentric, the pattern has to repeat evenly around the circle, and everything has to bend to follow the curve of the chest without looking warped. Erik's review points right at it, attention to detail and clean line work, which is exactly what a piece this geometric demands.

Wrapping a flat circular design onto a rounded chest is the hard part. Chyloe mapped the layout to the body first, so the medallion looks round and correct when you are standing in front of it, not just on paper.

What should you expect from a big chest tattoo?

Plan for time and a bit of grit. The chest and sternum are among the more sensitive spots to tattoo, and a piece this size usually takes more than one session. Eat a real meal beforehand, and know that breaking a large blackwork design into stages keeps the linework and fills clean.

Healing runs two to three weeks per session, and large black areas can look patchy while they flake before they even out. Keep it clean, moisturized, and out of the sun. If you want a geometric or blackwork piece of your own, Chyloe will design it to your body. See more of his line and design work on the tattoos by Chyloe page.

Geometry is unforgiving, which is what makes a piece like this impressive. Every ring has to stay true, and any wobble shows immediately, so the drawing and stencil stage takes real time before the machine ever turns on. That patience up front is why the finished medallion looks clean and deliberate rather than freehanded.

For a piece this size, plan around the sessions. The chest and shoulder are sensitive, and large black fills are easier on your skin and the final result when they are spread across more than one sitting. Come in rested, eat beforehand, and treat it like the project it is.
